USA Today columnist Christine Brennan disputes Defector headline

USA Today columnist Christine Brennan requested a meeting with an editor at Defector following the publication of an article by Giri Nathan. The Defector piece criticized Brennan for her perceived fixation on measuring the WNBA's success through the lens of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

Brennan expressed particular dissatisfaction with the article's headline, which stated, ‘Christine Brennan Has Fully Lost It Over Caitlin Clark.’ In her response to Nathan, Brennan noted that she has covered the WNBA since its inception in the late 1990s and criticized the current leadership of the league, specifically calling out Cathy Engelbert for ‘rudderless leadership.’

During a subsequent 20-minute conversation with Defector editor Samer Kalaf, Brennan cited her long history of sports journalism and mentioned that Dr. Harry Edwards had expressed shock at the headline. Brennan also advocated for league changes, including an investigation into messages received by players like Kelsey Mitchell and the implementation of a transgender policy.
