USAID funding cuts could lead to millions of deaths by 2030

A study published in The Lancet suggests that significant reductions in international development aid could lead to millions of additional deaths by 2030. The research highlights the impact of the closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and drastic cuts to international aid directed toward the Global South.

According to the study, Trump administration policies regarding USAID could result in 14 million additional deaths by 2030. This trend is not limited to the United States, as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Japan have also implemented historic budget cuts to their cooperation programs.

To mitigate these consequences, an organization led by the Catalan Institut de Salut Global (ISGlobal) proposes fiscal measures. The study suggests that imposing specific tax measures on a small number of billionaires could potentially save up to 30 million lives by 2030 by restoring the flow of aid to the most vulnerable nations.
