Usain Bolt supports prize money for Olympic athletes

Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt has expressed support for World Athletics’ decision to provide prize money to Olympic athletes. The governing body awarded $50,000 to individual gold medallists at the Paris 2024 Games and intends to include silver and bronze medallists for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Speaking in Budapest ahead of the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, Bolt emphasized that athletes deserve compensation for the physical risks they take. He noted that injuries sustained during competition can significantly impact an athlete's subsequent years of work.

The World Athletics Ultimate Championship features a record-breaking $10 million prize pot. Individual champions in Budapest are set to receive $150,000, while relay teams will share $80,000. The prize structure covers various medal placements to ensure athletes are compensated for their participation.
