USB-C fast charging standards and protocol compatibility
The proliferation of various USB-C fast-charging standards has created significant confusion for consumers. While the USB-C connector is ubiquitous, the presence of the port does not guarantee high-speed charging. Instead, charging speeds depend on the compatibility between the smartphone, the cable, and the charger's specific protocol.
Manufacturers have developed proprietary solutions to increase charging speeds, such as Qualcomm’s Quick Charge, Oppo’s SuperVOOC, and Xiaomi’s HyperCharge. Because these protocols often differ, a high-wattage charger will not necessarily provide maximum speed to a device that does not support its specific standard. For example, a phone limited to 20W will not charge faster when connected to a 100W charger.
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) has emerged as the closest universal standard, used across smartphones, tablets, laptops, and handheld gaming devices. Newer iterations like USB PD 3.1 support up to 240W, though such high power is generally impractical for mobile phones due to heat concerns. Additionally, Programmable Power Supply (PPS) is a key feature used by brands like Samsung and Google to allow for more precise power adjustments.
