USB flash drives require urgent data backups due to hardware limitations
Users are advised to back up data stored on older USB flash drives due to inherent physical and technical limitations. While technologies like email, AirDrop, and cloud services such as iCloud have reduced the daily necessity of USB drives, many people still use them for portable storage or long-term archiving.
Several factors contribute to the risk of data loss. Physically, the small size of USB drives makes them easy to lose or damage. Technically, flash memory has a finite number of write cycles, typically ranging between 10,000 and 100,000, after which the device may fail. Additionally, the phenomenon of ‘bit rot’ poses a threat, as the electrical charges in flash memory cells can dissipate over time, leading to data corruption.
