USC faces backlash over low attendance at LA Coliseum season opener

The USC Trojans opened their 2026 college football season with a 42-26 victory over San Jose State, but the game drew significant criticism due to low attendance at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. While USC reported an official attendance of 51,144, viral images and observers suggested the stadium appeared much emptier, with some estimates placing the actual crowd closer to 25,000.

In response to the backlash, USC released a statement acknowledging the “factors” that impacted attendance—including high temperatures and the Week 0 scheduling—while expressing “high expectations” for future home games. The university also noted they implemented a “heat plan” to assist fans.

The sparse turnout drew sharp criticism from sports media personalities. Paul Finebaum mocked the university's official statement, suggesting it sounded “AI generated” and calling the attendance a “disgrace.” Similarly, Kirk Herbstreit criticized the fanbase, urging supporters to attend games regardless of the time or weather to support the team as they enter the Big Ten.

Factors cited for the low turnout included the noon kickoff time, extreme heat with heat-index temperatures reaching approximately 104 degrees, and the fact that San Jose State was a late addition to the schedule after a failed agreement to play Notre Dame.
