USC Trojans prepare for 2026 season opener against San José State
The USC Trojans are preparing for their 2026 season opener against San José State at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on September 29. Currently ranked No. 14 in the AP Poll, the team enters a high-pressure year under head coach Lincoln Riley, who is seeking his first College Football Playoff appearance in his fifth season.
Analysts have identified the Trojans as a potential “sleeper” team for the National Championship, citing a high-powered offense that ranked first in the Big Ten last season. Quarterback Jayden Maiava returns to lead the unit, supported by a running back duo described as one of the best in Riley’s coaching career.
To succeed, the team must address defensive concerns. Following a season where the defense struggled statistically and faced high penalty rates, USC has appointed former TCU head coach Gary Patterson as defensive coordinator to revitalize the unit.
