USCCB announces timeline for new Liturgy of the Hours edition

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has announced the implementation timeline for the Second Edition of the Liturgy of the Hours, marking the first major English revision in the United States in over fifty years.

Following confirmation of the new translation by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio signed a decree establishing key dates. The new edition will be lawful for use starting Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2027. The current translation will be retired on the First Sunday of Advent, December 3, 2028, which serves as the mandatory-use date.

A transition period will exist between these two dates. During this time, clergy and religious bound by canon law may continue using current volumes to fulfill their obligations. Laypeople using the books for personal devotion are not subject to the mandatory transition and may continue with their current volumes as they choose.
