Uschi Glas warns silent majority threatens German democracy
Actress Uschi Glas told taz that a “silent majority” is the greatest danger to democracy, calling on citizens to speak up and confront rising anti‑Semitism. She recalled her own family's trauma from 1933, condemned the lack of public response after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, and noted her participation in Munich demonstrations demanding the release of hostages.
Glas also reflected on her film career, expressing regret that she missed opportunities in the 1960s‑70s New German Cinema because she refused to align with left‑wing political activism, which she now sees as a lost artistic chance.
