USCIS initiates green card renewal consultation amid warnings over rapid interview denials

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has initiated a public consultation period regarding the continuation of Form I-90, which permanent residents use to renew or replace green cards. Under the Paperwork Reduction Act, the agency is seeking feedback on the necessity of data collection, the time required for the process, and potential technological simplifications. Interested parties may submit observations until December 7.

Separately, legal experts have warned that unusually rapid processing during USCIS interviews may be a negative indicator. Immigration attorney Jim Hacking, founder of Hacking Immigration Law, suggests that expedited interviews can signal that officials perceive a case as an easy denial. Hacking notes that in the current 2026 landscape, officers may be pressured to meet expectations by quickly rejecting applicants who lack sufficient documentation to facilitate removal processes.
