USCIS to update Form I-485 for Green Card applications

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will stop accepting the 01/20/25 edition of Form I-485 starting September 18, 2026. This form is used by individuals within the United States to apply for permanent residency through an adjustment of status, including family-based or employment-based petitioners, refugees, asylees, and certain individuals under the Cuban Adjustment Act.

Applicants must use the new version of the form that the agency will publish on that date. While USCIS will continue to accept applications postmarked or electronically submitted before September 18, 2026, using the older edition, any application rejected for errors—such as missing signatures, incorrect fees, or incomplete documentation—must be resubmitted using the new 09/18/26 edition if the correction occurs on or after the deadline. There is no grace period for resubmitting with the previous version.
