USCIS to implement new Green Card application form on September 18

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will release a revised version of Form I-485, the application used to register permanent residence or adjust status, on September 18. The new edition, dated September 18, 2026, will supersede the current version dated January 20, 2025.

USCIS has warned that there will be no grace period for the transition. Applications using the old version postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18 will be rejected. Conversely, the new edition should not be submitted before its effective date.

The update is expected to significantly impact applicants seeking employment- or family-based Green Cards, including many Indian nationals who have faced long wait times for immigrant visa numbers.
