USDA and HHS launch Harvest to Hallways school meal initiative

The Trump administration has launched the ‘Harvest to Hallways’ initiative, a program designed to reform federal school meal programs by prioritizing nutrient-dense foods and local agriculture. Announced by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the initiative aims to reduce reliance on ultra-processed foods and refined grains in favor of whole grains, whole milk, and high-quality proteins.

The program includes significant financial investments: up to $70 million for school cafeteria infrastructure, such as stoves and refrigerators, $25 million for Farm to School Grants to support local food procurement, and approximately $30 million for research into implementing new dietary guidelines. The administration’s goal is to connect schools more directly with local farmers and ranchers to improve food quality and support American agriculture.

Officials stated that the changes align with the administration’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ agenda, seeking to address childhood obesity by encouraging scratch cooking and reducing added sugars. The updated dietary guidelines, which will remain in place until 2030, will influence various federal food programs, including those for veterans, the military, and the prison system.
