USDA announces $8 billion harvest fuel relief for farmers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced an $8 billion 'harvest fuel relief' program to assist growers facing rising input costs, specifically high diesel prices. The program aims to offset losses during the 2026 crop year by providing one-time payments based on estimated losses related to planted acreage, yields, and production costs.

This initiative follows a previous 'farmer bridge assistance' program that provided over $12 billion to approximately 560,000 farmers. The USDA plans to release payment rates for major commodities like corn, soybeans, and wheat in November, while specialty crop rates will be announced later.

Amidst these fuel cost concerns, agricultural groups are divided over a proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. Proponents, including Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen and companies like POET, argue the coast-to-coast single-operator railroad would reduce shipping delays by 24 to 48 hours by eliminating handoffs between networks. Opponents express concern that reduced competition could lead to higher costs and diminished service for producers.
