USDA implements new inventory requirements for SNAP retailers

Retailers authorized to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in the United States must comply with new USDA regulations regarding food inventory. By November 4, 2026, participating stores must increase the variety of essential food items offered to maintain their status in the network.

The new standards require stores to offer at least seven varieties across four key categories: proteins, grains, fruits or vegetables, and dairy or plant-based alternatives. This increases the minimum variety requirement from three to seven per category. With a requirement of three units per variety, stores must maintain a minimum inventory of 84 units. Additionally, at least one variety in three of the four categories must be perishable.

In New York City, local programs are providing additional support to families using SNAP/EBT. The Health Bucks program offers $2 coupons for every $2 spent on locally grown produce at farmers' markets, up to $10 daily. Furthermore, the ‘Get the Good Stuff’ program through the NYC Department of Health provides free fruits, vegetables, and legumes at participating supermarkets.
