U.S. Forest Service proposes rescinding 2001 Roadless Rule
The Trump administration has filed a formal proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a federal regulation that protects approximately 59 million acres of national forest land from logging, road construction, and mining. The U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture argue that the 25-year-old rule is a “one-size-fits-all” mandate that restricts local land managers and hinders efforts to reduce wildfire risks by preventing necessary fuel reduction treatments.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that the current restrictions prevent essential management to improve forest health and mitigate the threat of “tinderbox” conditions caused by overgrown vegetation and disease. The proposed change aims to return decision-making authority to local agencies. The rule primarily affects ten Western states, including California, Alaska, Arizona, and Utah, which contain over 95% of the inventoried roadless areas.
Environmental groups and conservationists have strongly opposed the move, warning that rescinding the protections could irreversibly damage wildlife habitats, drinking water sources, and climate resilience. They argue that opening these lands to industrial activity threatens some of the nation’s last remaining undisturbed wildlands. A public comment period regarding the proposal and the draft environmental impact statement is scheduled to run until September 21.
