USDA urges farmers to report fertilizer industry price collusion
U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden is calling on American farmers to report potential anti-competitive practices and unfair pricing within the fertilizer industry. Speaking at an event in Iowa organized by the Iowa Corn Growers Association, Vaden noted that documented patterns of behavior from numerous producers would make it difficult for industry lawyers to dismiss claims of market collusion.
The investigation, which involves the Federal Trade Commission, seeks to determine if the fertilizer market operates as a free market or if consolidation has led to monopolistic practices. To address fears of retaliation, officials are encouraging farmers to submit evidence anonymously through the SaveFamilyFarms.us website.
Farmers at the event highlighted the severe economic impact of fertilizer costs, with some reporting millions of dollars in extra expenses over two decades. Attendees also noted rising farm bankruptcies, citing a broken market where fertilizer monopolies profit at the expense of agricultural producers.
