USDA uses AI models to track New World screwworm risk
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service are implementing predictive models to track and manage the spread of the New World screwworm. This initiative follows recent new cases of the pest appearing in the United States.
The strategy utilizes artificial intelligence, environmental data, and historical outbreak patterns to forecast potential infestation sites and movement pathways. By analyzing ecological suitability, weather conditions such as temperature and precipitation, and historical data, the models aim to facilitate precision intervention.
Dr. Scott Hutchins, Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics at the USDA, noted that modeling movement allows for the optimal placement of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to maximize impact and accelerate eradication efforts. The goal is to protect U.S. livestock, pets, and wildlife through faster, more targeted responses.
