USDC liquidity grows on Solana as address poisoning theft occurs

Recent developments in the cryptocurrency sector highlight both growing institutional liquidity and evolving security threats. On August 20, 2026, Circle’s USDC Treasury minted 250 million USDC on the Solana blockchain in a single transaction. This issuance is part of a larger trend where approximately $1.25 billion in USDC was minted on Solana within a single week in mid-to-late August 2026, signaling increased demand from DeFi and institutional users.

Simultaneously, a significant security incident involving ‘address poisoning’ resulted in the loss of 2,000,000 USDC on August 21, 2026. In this attack, a fraudulent address was used that matched a legitimate recipient in seven of forty characters. Because many wallets and block explorers display only shortened versions of addresses, the discrepancy was difficult to detect. The attacker successfully tricked a user into copying the fake address from their transaction history, leading to an authorized but unintended transfer of funds.
