USD/KRW exchange rate nears 1,380 won following Fed Chair's remarks
The USD/KRW exchange rate approached the 1,380 won level following hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. Warsh emphasized that the Fed must ensure structural inflation moves toward its 2% target at a sufficient pace, stating, “If not, we have work to do.”
These comments have bolstered the US dollar and increased Treasury yields, as markets interpret the stance as a signal that the Fed may maintain a restrictive policy if inflation does not stabilize. The dollar index rose toward the 99.7 level, and the possibility of a rate freeze in September has seen adjusted expectations.
In the Korean market, the exchange rate saw upward pressure from offshore short-covering and domestic buying demand. However, the potential for further increases may be limited by month-end profit-taking from exporters, particularly in the semiconductor sector, as well as yen volatility and Middle East geopolitical tensions affecting oil prices.
