Used Car Buyers Urged to Check Vehicle History and Update Insurance Policies

Purchasing a used car requires thorough research of the vehicle’s background. Buyers should verify MOT history, mileage, any outstanding finance, insurance write‑off status, stolen‑vehicle records, registration and keeper history, specifications and market valuation. Access to official vehicle data and OEM service history records helps confirm that regular maintenance was performed and that the car has been cared for.

Insurance considerations are equally important. The no‑claim bonus (NCB) does not automatically transfer with the vehicle; the new owner must arrange their own policy and may retain their own NCB based on personal claim history. Under Indian motor‑insurance rules, the insurer must be notified of the ownership change within the prescribed period, and a revised policy schedule should be issued. Prior claims on the vehicle can influence underwriting and coverage decisions, so buyers should request claim details and repair invoices before finalising the purchase.
