Automotive advice: Winter tire testing and vehicle purchase tips

As winter approaches, several key automotive considerations have emerged for drivers. A recent ADAC test of 32 winter tire models revealed significant quality disparities; only six models received a 'good' rating, while 15 were not recommended. Top performers included the Continental WinterContact TS 870 and Pirelli Cinturato Winter 3.

For those purchasing used vehicles, experts recommend inspecting the engine during both cold and warm starts. A cold start—performed when the engine is at ambient temperature—is essential to detect issues with the starter, battery, or irregular idling that might be masked by a pre-warmed engine.

Additionally, new traffic regulations regarding daytime running lights will take effect on November 1. From November 1 to March 31, motorists must use daytime or low-beam lights during the day. Failure to comply can result in fines of 30 euros for car drivers, while cyclists and e-scooter users face fines of up to 60 euros for improper lighting during twilight or low visibility.
