Used car odometer tampering: How to detect fraud

Odometer tampering has become a widespread issue in the used car market, allowing sellers to artificially inflate vehicle prices by thousands of euros. This practice can lead buyers to purchase vehicles with significantly higher mileage than indicated, potentially resulting in premature wear of critical components such as turbines, fuel injectors, DPF filters, and clutches.

To identify potential fraud, buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle's interior, which often provides more accurate clues regarding usage than the dashboard display. Key indicators of high mileage include wear on the driver's seat bolster, excessive smoothing or unnatural cleanliness of the steering wheel, and peeling paint or worn textures on frequently used switches, such as window regulators and light controls.
