Used electric vehicle market in Italy faces battery health uncertainty

Interest in the used electric vehicle (EV) market in Italy is rising, according to data from carVertical. Between January and August 2026, history checks for electric vehicles increased by 30.9%, with the share of EV checks growing from 0.35% in 2024 to 0.89% in the first eight months of 2026.

Tesla remains the most searched brand in Italy, accounting for 38.4% of searches, followed by Audi at 11.8% and smart at 8.2%. Other frequently checked brands include Volkswagen, Renault, BMW, Mercedes, Fiat, Peugeot, and Porsche.

Despite growing interest, battery health remains a significant barrier to market stability. Approximately 67.3% of Italian dealers cited concerns regarding battery longevity and potential failures as a primary source of uncertainty. Furthermore, 75.5% of dealers consider battery-related worries a major factor in sales. While rising fuel prices for gasoline and diesel have driven some demand toward used EVs, the lack of standardized tools for dealers to accurately test battery health continues to impact the sector.
