Used EV market shows growth amid shifting demand and policy debates
The used electric vehicle (EV) market is seeing shifts in availability and demand. In the United Kingdom, all-electric models accounted for more than one in 18 transactions between April and July, an increase from one in 30 during the previous year. This growth contributed to the overall used car market exceeding two million units for the first time in five years.
Industry representatives have noted that while EV adoption is rising, approximately nine in 10 used sales remain petrol or diesel vehicles. There are ongoing discussions regarding the government’s ZEV Mandate, which aims to increase the market share of new EVs. Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns that the mandate focuses on market share rather than total volumes, potentially diverting investment toward discounts rather than long-term model innovation and infrastructure development.
In other markets, such as Australia, the second-hand EV market offers various price points. Older models like the 2012 Nissan Leaf are available for under $10,000, though concerns remain regarding battery state of health and limited range. Mid-range options, including 2020 MG ZS EVs and newer Nissan Leaf models, are positioned in the $10,000 to $20,000 bracket, offering improved battery capacity and real-world range.
