Usera inaugurates first Chinese arch in Madrid
The Usera district in Madrid has inaugurated its first Chinese arch, a monumental sculpture titled ‘Two Cultures in Love’ created by artist Okuda San Miguel. Located in Plaza del Hidrógeno, the 11-meter-high structure is designed to symbolize the harmony between Spanish and Chinese cultures within the district, which hosts Spain’s largest Chinese population.
The artwork features a bear, representing Madrid’s identity, embracing two dragons, a traditional Chinese symbol. Built from white concrete with glazed ceramic tile roofs, the arch serves as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese ‘paifang’. The project cost approximately 490,000 euros, with 210,000 euros allocated for civil works and 280,000 euros for the artistic intervention.
The arch is part of a new two-kilometer pedestrian route connecting the heart of Usera with Madrid Río. The project involved collaboration between the Usera Municipal Board, local Chinese community groups, and the artist. The structure includes Chinese calligraphy on both sides, featuring messages regarding coexistence, respect, and harmony.
