Smart TV users employ AI to remove ads and bloatware
A growing number of consumers are using artificial intelligence coding assistants, such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and DeepSeek, to strip advertisements, tracking mechanisms, and preinstalled bloatware from their smart televisions. This trend, often referred to as “vibe coding,” allows users to simplify complex interfaces and restore basic functionality without requiring advanced programming expertise.
Open-source projects like “CleanYourTV” and “DumbTV” are central to this movement. These tools leverage AI to connect to devices via Wi-Fi and use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) commands to disable unwanted system packages. The process is particularly effective for devices running Android TV, Google TV, or Amazon Fire TV, including brands such as Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, Xiaomi, and Nvidia Shield. However, the tools are generally incompatible with Samsung’s Tizen OS or LG’s webOS.
The movement is driven by frustration over Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology, which monitors viewing habits to serve targeted advertisements. While the modifications can result in faster, more minimalist interfaces similar to Apple TV, experts warn that the process is experimental. Users have reported risks such as the accidental deletion of critical system files, device instability, and the potential voiding of manufacturer warranties.
