USFK Commander calls for decentralized training amid North Korean combat experience
Javier Brunson, Commander of United States Forces Korea (USFK), has called for a shift in ROK-US combined military exercises to address the evolving security landscape. Speaking at an Army Association event in Washington, D.C., Brunson emphasized the need to move away from large-scale command post exercises toward more decentralized, distributed training methods across the Korean Peninsula.
Brunson noted that North Korea is gaining significant combat experience and strategic military capabilities through its troop deployment to Ukraine. This deployment has allowed North Korea to refine logistics, troop mobilization, and long-distance movement of personnel and equipment. Furthermore, North Korea is reportedly receiving advanced military technology and electronic warfare equipment from Russia in exchange for its support.
Regarding future defense strategies, Brunson discussed the concept of a ‘regional sustainment hub,’ suggesting that South Korea’s advanced defense industry could be utilized to ensure combat continuity in the Pacific. He also addressed the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON), stating that while he supports the principle of transfer based on agreed conditions, such a transition must not compromise essential defensive capabilities.
