Ushuaia authorities launch canine fecal sampling study
The Municipality of Ushuaia, the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), and the provincial Ministry of Health have launched a joint study to detect parasites in canine fecal matter across the city. The initiative aims to identify parasites that can be transmitted to humans and assess environmental contamination in public spaces.
Sampling is being conducted in high-traffic areas, including plazas, recreational parks, and locations near schools. The municipal Zoonosis Department is responsible for collection, while the UNTDF will perform microscopic laboratory analysis. Samples are being georeferenced to map the distribution of zoonotic risks.
The resulting data will be used to inform public health decisions, including prevention measures, deworming strategies, and pet ownership guidelines. This project continues previous research in Tierra del Fuego regarding the impact of these organisms on public health and the urban environment.
