Ushuaia Integrated Naval Base construction to begin in January

The Argentine government has announced that construction of the Integrated Naval Base in Ushuaia is scheduled to begin in January. Defense Minister Carlos Presti stated the project will require approximately US$450 million over four years to develop naval infrastructure, a pier, and facilities aimed at enhancing operational and logistical capabilities in the region.

Ushuaia Mayor Walter Vuoto highlighted the strategic importance of the base, noting its potential to transform the city into an Antarctic logistics hub and stimulate the local economy through a new network of suppliers. Vuoto noted that the project originated during the administration of Alberto Fernández and has seen roughly 10 percent progress to date, with earthmoving works representing 18 percent of the total scope.

Controversy has arisen regarding the project's funding, as the 2027 Budget proposal submitted to Congress does not include a specific line item for the Integrated Naval Base. In response to criticisms, the Official Response Office clarified that resources are incorporated within the Ministry of Defense's budget and that Decree 867/2026 provided significant funding to initiate works, including construction sites and the pier.
