Argentina targets oil companies with criminal complaints over Falkland Islands activities

The Argentine government has launched a significant legal and administrative offensive regarding sovereignty claims over the Falkland Islands. The administration of Javier Milei announced it will file new criminal complaints against oil companies and their executives for conducting hydrocarbon activities in the Argentine Continental Shelf without national authorization.

These legal actions aim to individualize directors, managers, and administrators involved in projects such as the Sea Lion project, which is operated by Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration. The government has already expanded its list of sanctioned subjects to 60, including 15 recently identified international companies, following an initial notification of 45 entities.

In tandem with these judicial measures, the Executive is preparing to submit a National Sovereignty Defense law project to the Chamber of Deputies. This legislative initiative may extend sanctions beyond the energy sector to include industries such as fishing. Additionally, the government is pursuing the reactivation of the Ushuaia Naval Base and has seen federal courts declare competence in environmental and sovereignty-related cases involving offshore drilling projects.
