Ushuaia municipality warns of funding shortfall as national subsidies disappear

Yésica Garay, chief of staff of the Ushuaia municipality, said the city is forced to assume responsibilities that historically belonged to the national government. She warned that the cessation of the federal transport subsidy and the sharp decline in national investment for large‑scale public works are straining municipal budgets, jeopardising essential services such as public transport and infrastructure maintenance.

Lorena Henriques Sanches, the municipality’s secretary of Habitat and Territorial Planning, argued that the lands within the urban ejido ceased to be national property after the 2025 provincialisation. Citing national law 23,775 and provincial law 323, she rejected a national government request to evacuate the municipal Winter Logistic Centre, asserting that the land now belongs to the province and, in urban areas, to the municipality. She highlighted the site's potential for up to 400 housing units and warned that recent national policies threaten the city’s strategic development and sovereignty.
