Ushuaia officials report rising social vulnerability

Verónica Maestro, the Secretary of Women and Human Development for the Municipality of Ushuaia, has warned of increasing social vulnerability due to the current national economic situation. Maestro reported a rise in demands for municipal assistance, noting that even families with paid employment are struggling to cover essential costs such as rent and basic services.

The municipality is currently assisting residents with utility debts and service reconnections. Maestro also highlighted a growing number of people experiencing homelessness, stating that the municipal shelter has reached full capacity with families, children, men, and women.

Maestro criticized the reduction of municipal resources and a lack of national assistance programs, attributing the worsening conditions to a national economic model that excludes many families. She emphasized the need for coordinated efforts with the provincial government to address mental health and substance abuse issues.
