Ushuaia Port Project Targets Clean Energy as Argentina Boosts Port Investment
Minister of Energy of Tierra del Fuego, Gabriela Castillo, presented a project to convert the Port of Ushuaia into a clean‑energy terminal at the Federal Investment Logistics Meeting in Buenos Aires. The plan seeks financing to install shore‑side electricity and green‑fuel supplies so vessels can shut down their engines while docked, cutting emissions and improving the port’s competitiveness as a gateway to Antarctica. Castillo emphasized provincial sovereignty over the port’s management and criticized the Argentine National Ports and Navigation Agency (ANPYN) for what she called an illegitimate intervention.
The meeting, organized by the Federal Investment Council (CFI), gathered representatives from the eleven Argentine port provinces, private port operators, multilateral lenders such as the World Bank and the Inter‑American Development Bank, and national officials including the director of ANPYN. Participants discussed the Port Competitiveness Plan and financing options to support infrastructure projects like the Ushuaia clean‑energy terminal, aiming to strengthen the country’s water‑borne logistics network.
