Ushuaia energy project advances with $80M Chinese investment

Officials in Tierra del Fuego, including Governor Gustavo Melella and Ushuaia Mayor Walter Vuoto, recently inspected the construction site of a new power generation plant in Ushuaia. The project follows the successful logistics operation to transport over 6,200 tons of equipment from the port, which originated from China.

The investment, exceeding $80 million, is being driven by private Chinese capital in partnership with local entities. The new infrastructure is expected to add between 60 and 100 megawatts to the local grid, aiming to provide a long-term solution to energy shortages, prevent power outages, and support the city's industrial and tourism growth for the next several decades.

During the visit, senators also addressed regional concerns in Tierra del Fuego, including energy supply stability, job losses, and sovereignty issues regarding the construction of a new Integrated Naval Base in the area.
