Ushuaia records lowest snowfall in 41 years

Ushuaia experienced its lowest snowfall in 41 years during the 2026 meteorological winter (June, July, and August). According to data from the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicas (CADIC), the scarcity was caused by a combination of temperature and precipitation patterns. While June saw high precipitation, elevated temperatures caused much of it to fall as rain rather than snow. July was characterized by extremely low precipitation, and August saw a combination of low precipitation and temperatures above average.

Geologist Juan Federico Ponce warns that this deficit could have significant long-term consequences. The lack of snow may reduce river and stream flows during the spring, as these water sources rely heavily on snowmelt. This trend poses risks to the city's water supply and the local tourism industry. The impact has already been felt locally, with the suspension of the 'Marcha Blanca,' a traditional winter sports event in the region.
