Usiminas announces R$ 3.5 billion investment plan amid financial pressure

Usiminas has announced a R$ 3.5 billion investment plan focused on three primary projects: repairing its coke ovens, implementing a pulverized coal injection (PCI) plant, and installing a new gasometer. The company expects to invest between R$ 1.4 billion and R$ 1.6 billion this year.

Key infrastructure projects include a R$ 978 million repair of coke oven battery 3, scheduled for completion in 2028, and a R$ 1.7 billion partial reconstruction of battery 4 in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, expected to finish in 2029. The battery 4 project is anticipated to create approximately 800 jobs and increase the production of coke and coke oven gas, reducing reliance on external suppliers.

Additionally, Usiminas is investing R$ 597 million in a new PCI grinding and injection plant, slated for 2026, to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A R$ 233 million gasometer installation is also planned for completion in 2027.

These capital expenditures come as the company faces financial challenges. Usiminas shares fell 8.59% following a weak third-quarter performance, where rising industrial costs and limited demand pressured margins. In the steel division, Ebitda fell 21.8% sequentially, impacted by higher costs for steel plates, coke, and a weaker real against the dollar.
