US‑India Soybean AI Research Partnership Secures $528,137 NSF Grant

U.S. computer‑science professor Dr. Xiaolei Huang of the University of Memphis has been awarded a $528,137 grant from the National Science Foundation. The three‑year project, running from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2029, is a joint effort with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under an NSF‑MeitY collaboration programme.

The initiative, named SoyWatch, will develop a smart‑sensing network that combines next‑generation wireless communications (NextG) with artificial‑intelligence analytics to monitor soybean growth, soil conditions, pests and disease in real time. Researchers aim to give breeders more precise data to improve soybean yields and productivity, contributing to global food security.

The consortium includes investigators from the University of Memphis, the University of Missouri, Kennesaw State University, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Sher‑e‑Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
