US‑Iran agreement in jeopardy as Middle East tensions rise

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said the United States must honor its commitments under the recent U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding and compel the Israeli side to implement its provisions. He emphasized that a halt to hostilities must include all fronts, notably Lebanon, and warned that any U.S. failure to act would negatively affect the broader process. Baghaei noted that forthcoming talks in Doha will address implementing parts of the memorandum, such as the release of Iranian assets held abroad.

An analysis in a regional magazine argues that the memorandum is unlikely to survive the accelerating military escalation between President Donald Trump’s administration and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. The piece points to deep mistrust, U.S. domestic political pressures, Israeli and Gulf influences, and the risk of renewed armed conflict. It highlights potential consequences: continued freezing of Iranian funds, hindrance to reconstruction, sustained Israeli presence in southern Lebanon, ongoing U.S. naval pressure in the Strait of Hormuz, and wider regional instability.
