USITC investigates Apple, Samsung, and Google over spatial audio patents
The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has launched an investigation (case number 337-TA-1521) into alleged patent infringements involving Apple, Samsung, and Google. The probe was initiated following a complaint by BoomCloud 360, a California-based audio technology company.
BoomCloud 360 alleges that the tech giants have violated three patents related to spatial audio technology. The company is seeking a limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders to prevent the import, sale, and distribution of the infringing products within the United States. The disputed technology includes methods for adjusting gain levels between spatial audio and standard audio, compensating for left-right speaker differences, and managing crosstalk.
While the investigation could potentially impact various electronic devices, including smartphones, headphones, and tablets, the specific models involved have not yet been publicly identified. Apple, Samsung, and Google have initiated legal proceedings to contest the allegations. The investigation is being conducted under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930.
