USKOK investigation reveals massive illegal waste dump in Benkovac

An investigation by USKOK into illegal waste disposal in Benkovac has revealed that at least 6,475 tons of heterogeneous waste were buried in a former quarry. Environmental experts from the University of Varaždin found that the waste contains high concentrations of metals, dissolved organic carbon, and microplastics. Testing also confirmed the mobility of antimony, a highly toxic element.

Microplastics were detected in soil samples taken outside the boundaries of the disposal site, suggesting they have already spread via wind or water. While a stone barrier has prevented spread up to 150 meters away, experts warn of potential contamination of groundwater and the food chain.

In response to the investigation, which has expanded to include five individuals and four companies, Milivoj Špika of the Block of Retirees Together (BUZ) criticized the State Attorney's Office (DORH) and USKOK. He compared the judicial institutions to a fishing club that ‘catches, records, and releases,’ arguing that spectacular arrests lack impact if suspects are released without detention, thereby undermining public trust in the rule of law.
