Usman Khawaja reveals secret rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis
Former Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja has revealed that he managed a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in secret throughout much of his professional career. Khawaja was diagnosed at age 22 after experiencing debilitating knee pain that severely limited his mobility.
To continue playing, Khawaja relied on regular injections to manage the condition. He stated that he kept the illness private because he did not want it used against him or to serve as an excuse regarding stereotypes he faced in Australian cricket. He noted that even his closest friends were unaware of the condition until recently.
Khawaja will discuss these experiences in his upcoming autobiography, ‘Sabr’, scheduled for release on November 10. He expressed gratitude to the medical staff and cricket officials who maintained confidentiality regarding his health.
