Usman Nurmagomedov's UFC Future Fuels Opponent Debate

Undefeated lightweight Usman Nurmagomedov entered free agency after a first‑round knockout of Archie Colgan to retain his PFL Lightweight Championship. His manager Ali Abdelaziz argued that a bout with Ilia Topuria would suit Nurmagomedov’s style, saying the fight would be “one of the easiest” for him.

Coach Javier Mendez, speaking on the Weighing In podcast, warned that the UFC would not grant Nurmagomedov a title shot in his debut, calling such a move “suicide on their part” because it could validate the PFL’s champion status. Mendez suggested Paddy Pimblett as a more suitable introductory opponent, noting Pimblett’s 8‑1 UFC record and recent loss to current champion Justin Gaethje.
