USMCA labor mechanism invoked against Yokohama and BMW in Mexico
The United States government has requested that Mexico investigate the Yokohama tire plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, under the USMCA Rapid Response Labor Mechanism. The request follows allegations from the Liga Sindical Obrera Mexicana (LSOM) and the International Lawyers for Workers' Rights (ILAW) regarding violations of freedom of association and collective bargaining rights. U.S. authorities stated there is “sufficient and credible evidence” of these violations and have suspended the liquidation of pending imports from the Japanese plant.
In Coahuila, the state Labor Secretariat noted that federal authorities are responsible for resolving the disputes surrounding the union representation vote at Yokohama. The LSOM has alleged irregularities in the process, including vote manipulation and worker intimidation.
Separately, in San Luis Potosí, representatives of the LSOM have denounced ongoing pressure against workers at the BMW plant. The union claims that company personnel have violated rights to free association despite previous agreements. BMW management has denied rumors of impending layoffs targeting workers with health issues or union members.
