USMNT defender Chris Richards cleared for training ahead of World Cup opener

US men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino gave an update on defender Chris Richards ahead of the United States’ opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium. Richards, a Crystal Palace centre‑back, suffered a torn left‑ankle ligament during a Premier League game versus Brentford on 17 May and missed the pre‑tournament friendly as well as most team practices.

A video from Monday shows Richards back at full‑team training at the Great Park in Irvine, smiling, signing autographs and receiving round‑the‑clock treatment for his ankle. He said he feels good and is preparing for the opening match. Pochettino said “we will see,” but expressed optimism about his availability. Richards’ return is viewed as crucial for a US defence that also includes veteran Tim Ream, while the attack features Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun and a strong midfield core.
