USP researchers develop smart traffic lights that cut pedestrian wait time by 71%
A study by the School of Engineering (Poli) at the Universidade de São Paulo created an adaptive traffic‑light system that prioritises pedestrians. Using image sensors and a real‑time algorithm, the green phase is shortened when a pedestrian crosses quickly and extended for slower or mobility‑impaired walkers.
Virtual simulations based on real traffic flows in São Paulo showed a 71.4% reduction in pedestrian waiting time—about one minute per crossing—and a 22% cut in vehicle delay. The system was tested at four city locations, including Oscar Freire Street, the USP University Hospital and intersections in Cidade Tiradentes, demonstrating feasibility for wider urban‑mobility policies.
