Poland to host US micro‑balloon test, army tells civilians to ignore debris

The Polish Armed Forces will conduct a series of stratospheric micro‑balloon trials over the country between late July and early August. The balloons, launched from the U.S. base at Powidz and intended to travel northward to the Ustka training area, will operate at altitudes of 18‑21 km to test new reconnaissance and communication technologies in coordination with the United States European Command.

The exercise is described as safe and non‑threatening to the public, but the army issued a clear warning that any fallen equipment must not be touched. Residents who find debris are asked to leave it undisturbed and report the find to police, who will inform the military. The tests aim to enhance NATO’s eastern flank capabilities, providing persistent high‑altitude platforms for observation, communication and situational awareness.

The initiative follows a similar U.S. micro‑balloon experiment carried out in Sweden earlier this year and reflects growing interest among NATO members in using stratospheric platforms as cost‑effective complements to aircraft and satellites.
