USPS audit confirms significant mail delivery delays in South Dakota

An audit by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General has confirmed that mail service in South Dakota has significantly declined, leading to longer delivery times for various mail classes.

The report indicates that the USPS ‘Delivering for America’ modernization plan contributed to these delays. Specifically, the relocation of mail processing to out-of-state facilities in Denver, Fargo, and Omaha caused mail sent between South Dakota addresses to be routed through other states, impacting rural communities and businesses.

In response to the findings and pressure from U.S. Senator Mike Rounds, the USPS announced plans to upgrade a processing plant in Sioux Falls to a regional processing and distribution center. This change, expected to take effect in early 2027, aims to keep more mail within the state and reduce delivery times for certain packages.
