USPS implements technological upgrades to improve tracking visibility

The United States Postal Service is implementing a series of technological upgrades designed to improve mail and package visibility, reliability, and customer control. This modernization effort involves incremental improvements across the entire operating environment rather than a single technological shift.

Key advancements include the use of AI-powered cameras on new Matrix Regional Sorters and the introduction of the Intelligent Mail matrix barcode (IMmb). Unlike previous linear barcodes that could be difficult to read if packaging was warped or distorted, the two-dimensional IMmb can be scanned from nearly any angle. This technology increases data capture rates and enhances tracking accuracy for services such as Informed Delivery, which currently serves over 82 million users.
