USPS mail-in ballot system faces whistleblower warnings

A whistleblower has warned of ‘potentially catastrophic’ flaws in a new United States Postal Service (USPS) system designed to process mail-in ballots. The warning comes as the administration implements changes following a March 2026 executive order by Donald Trump aimed at increasing federal control over mail-in voting, a method used by approximately one-third of American voters.

The new system requires the USPS to only deliver mail-in ballots to individuals appearing on a federal list of eligible voters, created by immigration and Social Security services. However, the whistleblower claims the computer systems developed to comply with this order were ‘hastily and sloppily’ built. There are concerns that millions of voters may not receive their ballots on time or at all for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

This development follows a legal battle regarding the executive order. While a federal judge initially blocked parts of the order, the Supreme Court later lifted the stay, allowing the USPS to proceed. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has requested explanations from USPS head David Steiner regarding these systemic risks.
